The Heart of Texas Council of Governments is excited to celebrate women-owned businesses in the Heart of Texas this March for Women’s History Month! In March, we like to take the time to acknowledge and appreciate the innumerable accomplishments of women in the Heart of Texas and throughout the United States.

This yearly celebration of women’s achievements throughout American history originated in the 1980s. It was 1987 when the National Women’s History Project encouraged Congress to name March of that year “Women’s History Month” by passing Pub. L. 100-9. For the next few years, Congress asked that the President officially designate the month of March as Women’s History Month for all following years. Beginning in 1995, presidents have continued to announce that Women’s History Month will occur every March.

Not only have women left a positive footprint on the Heart of Texas economy, but they have also had an enormous impact on the national economy. U.S. women-owned businesses that hire workers gave jobs to 10.8 million people in 2019. They also had a higher revenue growth rate than U.S. men-owned businesses from 2014 to 2018.

We recommend that women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses in the Heart of Texas look over these resources from The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). With educational and funding programs for women-owned businesses, your company has the chance to take off and flourish.
