The Heart of Texas Council of Governments (HOTCOG), through its Area Agency on Aging (AAA), is proud to provide a Falls Prevention Program to enhance the lives of older adults in their six-county region. In collaboration with the National Council on Aging, the evidence-based program "A Matter of Balance" empowers older adults to overcome the fear of falling and improve their overall well-being.

Interested individuals can register themselves or other family members in the Falls Prevention Program by calling (254) 292-1855 or (855) 937-2372.

A Matter of Balance Program

The Falls Prevention Program, centered around "A Matter of Balance," emphasizes practical fall management strategies. Participants will learn to:

  • View falls as controllable
  • Set goals for increasing activity
  • Make changes to reduce the risk of falling at home
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

The program comprises eight weekly two-hour classes presented to small groups of 8-12 participants, led by certified trained coaches. It adopts a holistic approach to address the fear of falling by instilling the belief that falls are controllable. Participants are guided to set goals for increasing activity levels, make small changes to reduce fall risks at home and engage in exercises to enhance strength and balance.

Curriculum and Activities

The curriculum includes various interactive elements such as group discussions, mutual problem-solving, role-play activities, exercise training, assertiveness training, and homework assignments. Participants learn about the significance of exercise in preventing falls and practice routines to improve strength, coordination, and balance. Home safety evaluations and techniques for safe mobility are also covered. The program emphasizes a supportive environment, ensuring participants develop the skills and confidence needed to live independently.

Managerial Involvement and Special Projects

The Area Agency on Aging of the Heart of Texas provides services to older adults, Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries and their caregivers with access to needed community resources and advocacy. The Area Agency on Aging’s commitment to the success of the Falls Prevention Program is further demonstrated by the active involvement of its senior program coordinator, who aligns with the goals of the Health & Human Services Division. This engagement reflects the Area Agency on Aging’s dedication to enhancing the community's health outcomes through targeted initiatives.

Target Audience and Health Outcomes

The target audience for the Falls Prevention Program includes all adults (and their caregivers) who have started to limit their activity levels due to concerns about falling. This program is designed for those who can engage in problem-solving, may have experienced falls in the past, have a fear of falling, and currently live independently in the community.

Health outcomes sought through the program include improved fall efficacy, better fall management, increased activity and exercise levels, and fostering a sense of empowerment and independence among the participants.
